The name of the place is said that comes from the name of the river that washes the land: Moldova, and the toponymy of "Fundu" comes from the Latin "Fundus" meaning property, estate, a certain place - so a place situated on Moldova's banks. Other version is to be remembered: that this place is an end, a terminus point of the Moldova Province, meaning a place near the Moldova's springs or the most remote territories of the country. As any place, the Fundu Moldovei commune has its own setting up legend which explains names of places and villages: "As the story goes, in ancient times... three Romanians, shepherds from Ardeal, namely Petrea Colac, Nechita Tampau and Leonte Timul... made up their minds to cross over the mountains with their flocks towards east... And as they decided so they've done... They put their heads together to remain there forever. Petrea Colac settled in a glade near a stream, which is called Colacului Stream. Nechita Tampau settled down stream on Moldova River, in another glade, near another stream. But that stream was not called after his name but the Arsanesei Stream after his niece. Leonte Timul crossed the river and settled with his flocks on other stream's banks called since that moment Timului Stream or, as some people says, Chiman and more recently - Timan. So these three shepherds were the first people who settled and founded the village named Fundu Moldovei." First Recordings |
